Cooperation with the European Union on energy issues was discussed in the MFA of Turkmenistan

On May 28, 2021, the meeting of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union to Turkmenistan Diego Ruiz Alonso was held in the premises of the MFA of Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and prospects of collaboration of Turkmenistan with the European Union.

Special emphasis at the talks was made on the Energy Charter Treaty modernization process. As known, being a party to the given Treaty, Turkmenistan is actively involved in the negotiation process on its modernization in close coordination with the partner countries.  The resolution on modernization itself was adopted during the Ashgabat Conference of the Energy Charter in November 2017.

Among the key aspects of modernization of the Energy Charter Treaty are the investment component and financing, sustainable development and legal issues.  At the present meeting, the interest of the parties to the harmonization of the Energy Charter Treaty with the goals embedded in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change was voiced.
